Obama is my next President

Congrats goes to Barack Obama for making history and becoming the next president of the United States.  By all accounts the House and the Senate will also see major Democratic wins.  We now wait and see what the Democratic party will do with this mandate.  If they are smart they will act wisely and swing further centre than most majority parties have in the past.  As we have seen from the Republican mandates for the past eight years no matter how powerful a party, the stronger you are the harder you fall.  The question  has become will the Democratic party build a long term legacy or squander it, damaging their party as Bush had done in a mere eight short years? From what I have seen and read of Obama, I think I have made the correct choice when checking that box this morning. Now it is time for the US to come together, repair our image around the world and continue to be a beacon of Freedom to all.

  1. You definitely checked the right box this morning. Congrats. Make the US come together and repair its damaged image are worthy if not necessary goals. Here is my proposal for change: how about adding some increased oversight on the US financial system and stop spending trillions of borrowed dollars? :)

  2. @Pieter: If you’re against spending trillions of borrowed dollars, I don’t think you really think j5 checked the right box. :P

  3. Although, to be fair, for that kind of decision, there wasn’t really a ‘right’ box. (Bob Barr, maybe?)

  4. Matt, let us not forget which party was the last to balance the budget. And that Obama wants out of Iraq (expenditure not even on the budget). And that Obama’s economic advice comes from Paul Volcker, the man who stopped stagflation through control of the money supply and borrowing in the early 80s.

Although if you have a counterpoint I’d be curious.

  5. I think its clear that under Obama, we will get more of the same (of what we got under Carter). Energy Crisis? Wear a sweater, get a wood burning stove. Not enough gas? Wait in line buddy. Maybe we can get some more theocracies in the middle east too. I know, Obama could threaten our suppliers in the persian gulf with war, and call it the “Obama Doctrine”

And who doesn’t love double digit inflation or double digit interest rates on their mortgage? I’m sure homeowners will be thrilled when the prime rate hits 21.5 again.

I suppose its too late for Obama to surrender South Korea to North Korea however. We can still surrender Iraq though. Perhaps we can do another official boycott of the olympics? Reinstate the draft?

    I can haz rabbit incident?

The change will be ww3. Get ready for the most frightening 4 years ever. you will then see how well Bush kept us safe. Blame the economy on the liberals not GW. Just wait ubtil you trickle your hard earned money to the less non working degenerate who did nothing to deserve it. Remember, be careful what you wish for we just might get it. 10. Remember 9/11. Need I say more. why would anybody elect a muslim into the highest power. I would accept any other Democrate but barrack HUSSEIN obama. Its not pride its common sense.

  11. julie, you are such a troll.

    Comment by Russ — November 5, 2008 @ 5:33 pm

  12. Haha, you know calling someone a Muslim doesn’t actually make them that. Hey I’m of Asian decent, what religion am I?

Oh and 9/11 happened on GWB’s watch, not that I am blaming him, there are much more legitimate criticisms to level at the Bush administration.

Julie, trying to push lies as common sense is just deluded. Obama won, you can choose to accept it or be cynical. Sure, be part of the debate on his policies. Protest against him if you want but spreading lies and living in a world built up around your own world views will not change a thing.

My blog is about openness – I tolerate opposing points of view which are open and truthful. Outright lies however cross the line.

  13. Since when is a lie he is muslim that switched to christianity. Yea rev. wright, sounds like my kind of guy. I never heard that in my church. Have you? I just cannot imagine with all that was said and done there wasn’t a more qualified person for the pres. I am done, my opinion will never change, I do no trust Obama. God help this country, I hope I am wrong. Obama himself said he wasn’t qualified to be pres. in 03. But the liberal media wont discuss that. Good luck!

  15. j5, I am assuming that your title “Obama is my next President” is a play on the “Bush is not my President” that the left loved to spout. If that’s the case, don’t be petty. Notice how the right didn’t riot as the left stated they would if the election didn’t go their way. Can’t we all act like adults unlike the left has done for the last 8 years? I don’t think we’re going to see ODS (Obama Derangement Syndrome) on the level that we saw BDS.
I didn’t vote for President Elect Obama and disagree with him on most policy issues, but he is indeed my president and I say that proudly.
As for the Democrats in D.C., they own it all now. We’ll see what they do with it. I’m hope it’s not a disaster, but unfortunately I suspect it will be. As for the voters that supported them, may they get all the government they voted for… Me? I would gladly do with less. I am working toward that being the Republican platform for 2010 after which they actually deliver it.

  16. Julie, you are spreading false rumours. Barack was never a Muslim. His grandparents on his mothers side were raised Baptist, though were not particularly religious. His father, who he hardly knew, was raised Muslim but became an atheist by the time he met Barack’s mother.

My mother is Buddhist and my father Roman Catholic. I was raised Roman Catholic and though I am not very religious myself, culturally speaking I am Catholic. Being exposed to Buddhism from my mother does not make me Buddhist.

And who cares anyway? Prejudice based on religion is just as bad as prejudice based on race and color. If you knew any Muslims you would know they have the capacity to be a bad or as good as any Christian.

  17. who cares what you or your mother is you didn’t run for pres. then maybe I would care. Think outside the box!!!

  18. pjl,

Actually no, I was simply stating that Obama is my next President, a truism. I wasn’t being witty or petty. If you want to put me on the spectrum I am centre left. But you yourself are being petty by trying to stuff “the left” into a neat package. I have a lot of conservative friends, my cousin is a pretty famous Libertarian editor. My particular brand of liberalism is accepting many WELL THOUGHT OUT points of view, even those that I do not personally agree with. I have no stomach for conspiracy theories and unintellectual rhetoric such as some statement that the left thought the right would riot (I haven’t heard that, do you have legitimate sources you can cite?)

I however can agree with being proud of whoever we elect though I will be right there criticizing Obama and the Democratic party if they squander this mandate they were given. I voted for him and have been impressed with his ability to lead so far. Now we need to see how he translates that into leading the country.

  19. sounds like an experiment. Not willing to take the chance

    Comment by julie — November 6, 2008 @ 7:58 am

  20. j5,

Sorry, I worded it badly. The right did not riot after the election in stark contrast to the left who said they would had McCain won. Better? My definition of “Left” would be posters on DU, Kos and HuffPo as examples. Apologies for assuming that your statement was a play on the “not in my name” crowd.
