I’m a Debian Developer and Sacix (Custom Debian Distribution) lead developer. Sacix uses a Ltsp Muekow (package based on debian and ubuntu) to provide a full GNOME desktop on a lot of community telecenters (usage age range is 0-200). We’ve more than 100.000 end users here in Brazil and our next release will also support English and Spanish languages (pt_BR only atm). The main difference between Sacix and others ltsp based derivatives is that we’ve profiles support that gives each ’subproject’ the possibility to use their own set of packages and artwork. Actually, there are 5 profiles installable through the same ISO.

I would like to talk with you about how X0 could be used inside a community telecenter facility running Sacix. Usually there’s broadband, a technician that can provide support to the user and stuff like that.

Random ideas:
* Since thin-clients on many of these telecenters are booting Sacix through the wired LAN, we’re also interested in PXE over Wifi and the challenge to “provide a chroot” able to work as secondary system for one X0 user in a community telecenter.

* The telecenters under our ‘bless’ can act as network gateway for X0s through the Sacix server. It already happens with regaular laptops when people (rarely) show up with one in these places. The point is that telecenters have no APs so it sounds saner plug one XO in the local switch, and let it act as wifi APs for others XOs around. Configuration details should be tested.

Well, that would be great if you or some others from X0 visit some community telecenters here in Brazil and see how the actual infrastructure can benefit the OLPC project. I would be glad to participate in the project in some form wearing my Debian, Sacix hat or both.
