D-Bus in KDE and Gnome

So, KDE has switched over from DCOP which is awesome.  This means D-Bus will be a common thread between Gnome, KDE and any other desktop that makes the same moves.   This doesn’t mean that we are in a new utopia where we share every bit of technology but it does open up a channel of communication and mutual understanding where we can share where appropriate.   D-Bus was able to transcend the eww that is developed by a (name your least favorite desktop here) developer, most likely by avoiding the G or K prefix phenomena.   It did however spawn a thankfully short lived period of D prefix zealotry.

Where do we go from here?  Well D-Bus 1.0 can pretty much move forward for the core libraries.  Once that happens we can take a look at the D-Bus branch in Nautilus/Gnome-VFS and fix that up and look at other areas of the Desktop that are still using Corba which make sense to port.  It is up to the individual package maintainers on if and when we purge Corba.

People who want to see D-Bus become the Linux standard for desktop IPC find me at GUADEC and find out how you can help push it along.  Areas of interest will include splitting out the core from the bindings, and fixing up the Python and GLib bindings.

Hello Planet Gnome

Now that I am back on p.g.o at j5live.com I just wanted to send a quick note to the SoC deveopers and anyone who works with D-Bus or HAL. I am available to anyone who needs help with dbus, hal and integrating said technologies into their projects. I will also be holding D-Bus hacking sessions at GUADEC along with some of the other super awsome D-Bus developers. Hope to see you there. Rock on!!!

Blob free Intel Wireless drivers

Interesting article over at kernel trap. It seems there is a BSD driver for the new Intel wireless cards that do not require the binary daemon. The author takes a cheap shot at Linux, claiming driver devels are too afraid of pissing of Intel and are happy to ship the binary blob. I can say I am proud of Fedora’s stance on not shipping that binary blob but Damien Bergamini, the author of the driver, does hit on an important issue. Shipping said binary blobs does take the motivation out of making a working open source driver.

Mostly it is from the hardware vendors side. If they can get away with binary blobs and distros are willing to ship them, there is more incentive for them not to write an open source driver. If we allow the Intel wireless binary blob in it is just a signal to other vendors that they can keep their bits in a daemon and placate us with GPL’ed hooks.

It is not about us wanting to steal intellectual property and put it in the public domain. It is about us wanting to create a solid and stable operating system that works well with any hardware. We can’t do that if we can’t poke at the bits freely.

Did you miss me?

After having some trouble with transferring my martianrock.com domain name I decided to use my j5live.com domain instead.  It seems appropriate and once I get my domain transferred I’ll set it up as a redirect.  In any case, I’ve been back for awhile now and been very busy.  I have so much to talk about but I will refrain from making one big post.  For now check out my vacation photos.
