People have been trying to pawn off invites to Google Mail to me for some time. When I finally saw a need for one I had to go searching but I finally am one of the cool kids with an @gmail account.

Kudos on Google for using an open protocol. I now have a reason to run Gossip though I don’t have anyone in my lists yet. If Google would allow signups instead of just referrals I would even advocate defaulting to them in Gnome provided they are committed to open protocols and formats everywhere. If they have a pay for Sip service that works with the upcoming GnomeMeeting I would sign up in a second.
The point is Google really has the power and momentum to bring open protocols and formats to becoming the defacto standards. This tells me they want to compete in an open market and if they stick to that goal I want to support them as much as I can.
Update
Gossip works but…if you are not in my buddy list I can’t reply back. Must go file some bugs.

What’s so great about google talk?
I know it uses XMPP but who cares? It doesn’t work with other jabber servers anyways,,,
But it would be really cool if it did, then google would help jabber and XMPP alot…

The cool thing is Jabber actually has an entity with enough clout to make it popular. And I belive they will open it up.

Yeah, but people will think “I’ve just created a nice Google Talk account,” Not “How nice, I’ve just created a Google Talk account and it uses XMPP.”
See what I mean, to ordinary people this is just like MSN or Yahoo! or whatever and us who actually understand what it is can’t use it with other jabber servers.

If they open it up…

OK, this is my last comment,
I don’t mean to sound negative, but I know I did.
I’m really happy google chose XMPP instead of yet another shitty closed prop. protocoll.
And yeah, something in me says they’re going to open it up. (”We want to work with other willing service providers to enable their users to communicate directly with Google Talk users.”)

I lied, this is my last one.
I made a Talk account (already had gmail) when I first heard about it this morning before I started whining here.

I don’t think the point is the people knowing it. The point is companies see that a company can flourish even when using an open protocol. Hopefully it encourages other companies to follow suite and if not at least we can encourage google to keep on track so that we are no longer locked out.
