I finaly got bluetooth working with my phone and Rawhide. It really shouldn’t be that hard but it is. Really all bluetooth devices should show up in networking like ZeroConf devices do. I don’t know if it is possible to browse files on a bluetooth device or pull from a bluetooth device (as opposed to pushing files) but it should be. I can see why bluetooth really never took off. I’m going to look into making the desktop work much better with bluetooth devices. If every time I walk close to my computer and my address book syncs with evolution I will be happy. It really should be as easy as associating two bluetooth devices and selecting what actions you wish to happen when the devices connect.

It should be possible to browse the files on a phone via bluetooth. With a SonyErricsson K700i and a PowerBook running Mac OS X you can browse the phone. Same with Motorolla phones.
Unfortunately bluetooth development isn’t the fastest and some phones/usb dongles just work better than others.
It got so close and seems to have just missed being a perfect wireless protocol.

You can see what bluetooth profiles your phone advertises. After establishing a connection to your linux box, run the command
sdptool browse
and it will print out various services your phone provides.
If it has “OBEX File Transfer” you can easily transfer files to and from your gnome desktop.
Theoretically, you can browse the phone using OBEX operations, but I don’t know that it is implemented for Linux.
